Note on Husband: Frederick Samuel Alfred KITCHER (1)

Frederick Samuel Alfred Kitcher was born on 19th November 1915, the only child of Alfred Kitcher and Florence Annie Lewis. He was born at 3 Southampton Street, the home of his Grandparents, Samuel Lewis and Elizabeth Wareham. His Uncle Will Kitcher lived next door at 4 Southampton Street, his Lewis cousins including Samuel 'Hap' Lewis lived in Southampton Street, and his Grandparents Frederick Kitcher and Elizabeth Maria Colverson, and various uncles and aunts lived at 16 Carlton Place just around the corner. In spite of this, there seemed to be very little connection with Alf's Kitcher relatives.

Shortly after Alf was born his father Alfred was posted to France in the First World War. Alfred died of a bullet wound to his head and arm on the 16th October 1917 at 41 Casualty clearing station in France. He was buried at Godewaersvelde British Cemetery, France.

Alf was brought up by his mother and attended Central District School from 1924 until he left school in 1929. He met Irene Freda Williams and they often went on trips into the New Forest with various groups, including the Northam Boy's Club, which her father was leader. Alf and Freda married on 31 October 1934 at Southampton Registry Office. Alf was listed as a Shop Assistant in a Corn Merchants and Freda was listed as a Glove Maker. It is thought that they lived with Freda's parents at 3 Treeside Road when they were first married.

At some point Alf joined the Territorial Army, it has been suggested he joined the Princess Beatrice Isle of Wight Rifles. Otherwise he was listed as being part of the Royal Artillery.

Alf and Freda's first child Shirley was born in 1935 in Southampton, followed by a son David in 1937. They were living at 5 Janson Road for some of this time. By the time Karilyn was born in 1939, the family were living in Newport on the Isle of Wight. It is thought that Alf's mother Florence visited them whilst they were living there. Alf had joined the army by 8th February 1939 as he is listed as a Lance Bombadier, he had probably moved to the Isle of Wight whilst training.

Alf was promoted to the rank of Bombadier (16th September 1939) just after the start of the Second World War. During the war Alf was posted to Dover on the defensive guns pointing into the English Channel. During the war he was promoted quickly, 1st January 1940 was made Lance/Acting Sergeant,

6th May 1940 - Sergeant, 7th September 1940 - Warrant Officer Class 2, Battery Sergeant and then on 12th October 1945 - Warrant Officer Class 1, Regimental Sergeant Major.

Alf and Freda's son Dennis was born in Southampton in 1941, followed by Christopher being born in Bridport in 1942. Jane was born in Southampton in 1946.

In late 1946 Alf and his family sailed to Gibraltar where his regiment had been posted. Whilst in Gibraltar their final child, John was born. They returned to Southampton, Freda and the children arriving at Liverpool aboard the Empress of Australia on 19 May 1949. It is thought that whilst they were away, Alf's mother Florence moved into Knowle Mental Hospital, as her jewellery was sent to them in Gibraltar, including her engagement ring, which was given to Shirley who then lost it whilst swimming. When he left Gibraltar, Alf was given a bedside alarm clock with an inscription: FSAK from JL 47-49.

On their return they lived at 17 Families Camp, Hiltingbury, Chandler's Ford from May-Oct 1949 until Alf was posted to Brighton. When living at Brighton they lived firstly at 9 Wykeham Terrace, Brighton (Oct 1949-Sep 1950) and then at 13 Highcroft Villas, Brighton (Sep 1950-1953).

Alf's mother Florence Annie Lewis died on 15 May 1953 at Knowle Mental Hospital of Breast Cancer. During the same year it is though that Freda and their children (other than Shirley) moved back to Southampton, where they had bought 3 Treeside Road from her parents. Shirley stayed behind in Brighton with friends of the family as she had met Peter Martin who she would marry in 1955. Alf stayed behind in the barracks at Brighton.

Alf died on the 15th February 1956 at Preston Barracks, Brighton. He died from poisioning by carbon monoxide contained in coal gas - self inhaled from a gas ring in the Annexe to the Quartermaster's Office while the balance of his mind was disturbed. His funeral took place at St James Church Shirley, and he was buried at Hollybrook Cemetery, Southampton on 25 Feb 1956. The following was published in the Southern Evening Echo "KITCHER, Frederick Samuel Alfred, of 3 Treeside-Road, Shirley, Southampton. Suddenly on February 15, at Brighton. beloved husband of Freda - will be greatly missed by all his children. Funeral St James Church, Tuesday at 2pm. Floral tributes to Co-Op, Funeral Dept"
